Roadside Picnic

Studio Caruso · HS25

“Roadside Picnic is a Soviet-Russian novel. In the story, aliens passing through make landfall on Earth. During their stopover, they leave behind Zones: mysterious, dangerous areas full of inexplicable phenomena and valuable artifacts. They stopped on Earth as people stop at the side of the road, leaving their trash behind. The story follows Redrick Schuhart, an illegal treasure hunter who ventures into the Zone to recover and sell artifacts. He saw the potential and made use of it. Zentrum Töss feels like a leftover from the unbridled optimism of the 1970s. An artifact left behind. What do we do today with this brutalist concrete behemoth? Do we preserve it? Do we simply do nothing? How do you let a building speak for itself? How do we arrive at architectural self-evidence? In the spirit of Redrick Schuhart, we ventured into the Zone, discovered it, and tried to make use of the potential of this place. Our proposal was to use the existing structure and, where necessary, to complement it. On the square side, we pulled the facade of the space into alignment with the tower. At the rear, we opened the space toward the parking lot. This created a continuous space, intended to serve as a central gathering place for the residents.“
